We appreciate that our community, families and caregivers are often looking at multiple resources to gain knowledge on conception, pregnancy, birthing, postpartum, breastfeeding and parenting. Below you will find a short list of resources we hope will be additive. If you have any resources you would like to suggest we include here, please contact us.

  1. For Foreign Countries: If you need an Apostilles and/or Authentication of Certified Copies for a foreign country, please review requirements and instructions here. Do not apply for a birth certificate through the online portal; it must be mailed.

COMPLAINTS ABOUT HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

If you are concerned about the care you or someone you know received from a healthcare provider, you can file a complaint with the Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO). You can file either for unlicensed activity, or you can file a formal complaint.

CRYING

DONATING HUMAN MILK/ SEEKING HUMAN MILK

If you would like to donate human milk, please know there are no milk banks in Hawaii at this time. The Hawaii milk bank was closed in the 1980’s. 

Mothers’ Milk Bank, San Jose, CA. (877) 375-6645. You can donate milk here once approved by them. It’s a brief intake and a trip to the lab for blood work (they cover the cost). 

Human Milk 4 Human Babies - Hawaii Join this private Facebook group for mom to mom milk sharing (asking and donating). Please note this milk is not tested or pasteurized.

MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

  • Postpartum Support International (PSI) has numerous resources:

    • Helpline: 800-944-4773 call or text “HELP”

    • Facebook private support group: PSI

    • Free online support groups during pregnancy and postpartum (including for loss and abortion). Support groups also are available for dads and parents with toddlers. PSI focuses on perinatal mood disorders while also providing space for LGBTQIA+, military, black, hispanic, and south-Asian families. 

    • Local Support

    • Peer Mentor Program to connect with a peer 

    • Phone Chats with an Expert for moms and dads

    • Specialized Support Resources for infertility, adopting parents, gestational surrogates & intended parents, muslim parents, parents of children with disabilities and/or neurodivergence, grandparents, insomnia, perineal tears, preeclampsia, teen parents, etc.

SOCIAL SECURITY

  1. If you named your child on the birth certificate worksheet and selected “Yes” you would like a social security number requested for your child, the Department of Health submitted your child’s information complementary when the birth certificate was filed. If you did not name your child on the birth certificate worksheet, then you will need to apply for a social security number for your child once your child is named. 

  2. The social security card will arrive in the mail to the mailing address that was listed on the birth certificate worksheet. Generally it arrives within 6 weeks from the birth certificate being filed. If there is an issue on the social security card, such as the name spelled incorrectly, you will need to reach out to Social Security to address this, not the Department of Health.

  3. Review Social Security’s information on how to correct a name on the social security card here. Per Social Security, the middle name is not considered part of the legal name and they are not concerned about errors or omissions of the middle name. Only 26 characters each can be placed on line 1 and line 2 of the social security card so if the first or last name exceeds this many characters it will be cut short.
